TMJ/Jaw Massage

What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. It allows for the movement of the jaw, such as opening and closing the mouth, chewing, and speaking.

In common usage, when people refer to "TMJ," they are often talking about TMJ disorders or TMD (temporomandibular disorders), which are conditions affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. These disorders can cause pain, stiffness, clicking, or popping sounds in the jaw, as well as difficulty chewing or opening the mouth fully. The exact cause of TMD can vary, but it may result from injury, stress, teeth grinding, or misalignment of the teeth or jaw.

What to expect from a treatment?

The treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of medical history, range of motion, and pain points. Following this evaluation, tension in the upper back and neck will be released, and the jaw will be addressed using both extra-oral (external) and intra-oral (internal) techniques. These approaches may be applied individually or in combination, based on the specific needs of the client. The following therapeutic methods may be utilised:

  • Trigger Point Therapy

  • Deep Tissue Therapy

  • Myofascial Release

  • Active Release Techniques

  • Muscle Energy Techniques
